How to Buy Tires Online: A First-Timer's Walkthrough

Buying tires online feels strange the first time. It's a heavy, safety-critical product you can't touch, it needs professional installation, and the process has a few steps that don't exist when you just drive to a shop. But the mechanics are simple once you've seen them, and the payoff is access to the whole market's prices instead of one store's.

Here's the entire path, start to finish.

Step 1: Get your exact size

Everything starts with the size string on your driver's door placard, something like 225/65R17 98H. Pull it from the placard, not from your current tires, since the tires on the car might not be the spec size. Note the load index and speed rating along with the size, and check whether your vehicle uses different sizes front and rear.

Step 2: Confirm you actually need tires

Worth thirty seconds before spending hundreds of dollars. Check tread depth with the quarter test and check the sidewall date codes. If you're replacing due to age or damage rather than wear, you may only need two instead of four, though all-wheel-drive vehicles often require replacing all four together. Step 3: Compare prices across retailers, not within one

This is where online buying earns its keep. The same tire in the same size routinely varies by $40 or more between major online retailers, for reasons that have nothing to do with quality and everything to do with each store's inventory and pricing strategy. The practical move: search your size across multiple retailers and sort by price. Shipping to an installer is usually the smoother path: the tires arrive at the shop, the shop calls you, you show up and they do the rest. Step 5: Budget the real total

The tire price is the biggest number but not the last one. Mounting, balancing, TPMS service if your vehicle has pressure sensors, disposal of the old set, and tax all stack on top, whichever path you choose. Sometimes the local shop wins. Usually the online price advantage covers the install gap and then some. The point is to compare finished totals, not a bare online price against a bundled shop quote.

Step 6: Order, install, and keep the paperwork

After checkout, the retailer emails tracking, and tires generally arrive within a few days to a week. If they shipped to an installer, wait for the shop's call before booking your slot; if they shipped home, schedule your installer once tracking shows delivery.

At the install, ask the shop to set pressures to the door placard number, not the maximum on the sidewall. If your car has TPMS, confirm the sensors relearned and the dash light is off before you leave.

Keep the order confirmation and install receipt. Tire warranties, both the manufacturer's and any road hazard coverage, key off purchase date and proof of installation, and mileage warranties may require rotation records over the tire's life.

What can go wrong, honestly
